Wanted: Book Chapter Proposals
For? Orange is the New Black and the World of Sociology

Orange Is the New Black is a popular, Netflix show that expands upon Piper Kerman’s memoir, “Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison.” Kerman spent 13 months in prison for her small-part involvement in a drug ring. The drama follows Piper Chapman (the fictional character based on Kerman), and other inmates at the fictional Litchfield Penitentiary. Beyond having the plots just tell stories, many of the storylines have numerous sociological connections. Different parts of the show can be connected to many sociological topics such as the Black Lives Matters Movement, Gender and Sexuality, and medical sociology – among other subjects. Not only will this book be valuable to sociologists, because it shows how the media enhances society’s perceptions of different institutions, but the shows fans will be interested in reading the book too. We are looking for chapter contributions for the book. Please include your full name, institutional affiliation, and current position in the same word document as the abstract or proposal. Chapter/abstract submissions are due January 2nd. Submitters will be notified if their chapters/abstracts have been accepted and chapters are due May 15th. The Department of Gender and Women's Studies at the University of Wisconsin—Madison is accepting applications for an assistant professor position. We are searching in the two following fields (we welcome applicants with expertise in either field): (1) RACE: Seeking scholars working at the intersection of gender and race/ethnicity/indigeneity. Applicants whose work intersects with health, human rights, disability, and queer/LGBT studies are especially encouraged to apply. (2) HEALTH: Seeking scholars working at the intersection of gender and health. Evidence of a research agenda that focuses on health issues outside the United States is preferred but not required. Successful candidate in this field must demonstrate an ability to teach the undergraduate survey course: Women and Their Bodies in Health and Disease.
We are open to a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and methodological approaches, but engagement with feminist scholarship is required. Formal training in Gender and Women's Studies is a plus.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research, teaching and service missions of the department. Principle duties of the position will include teaching two courses per semester at the undergraduate and graduate level. Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate degree students required. Successful candidate will be expected to conduct scholarly research in area of specialization leading to publication at the national and/or the international level.
PhD (or other doctoral degree, e.g., DrPH, DNP) or MD prior to start of appointment required. Teaching experience preferred and demonstrated potential for research excellence is required.

Sociology Postdoctoral Research Fellow
The Vanderbilt University Department of Sociology is pleased to invite applications from qualified candidates for a five-year postdoctoral research position in our department. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment with regular working hours, benefits, etc., optimally beginning in January 2017.
For the successful candidate, the thrust of the work during this fellowship will utilize both quantitative and qualitative research methods to examine persistence in and attrition from the
STEM faculty pipeline at the doctoral and post-doctoral levels. In particular, we will examine the meaning of, salience of, and origins of an (academic/professional) science identity; how this identity may interact with other important social identities (e.g., racial, gendered); and the ways the academic-professional culture in which these individuals are embedded make academic research careers more or less attractive to them.
The Research Fellow, under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (Dr. Richard Pitt, Sociology), will play an active role in every aspect of research, from project design to disseminating findings in publications and presentations. Specific research activities include to varying degrees: instrument development, identifying and synthesizing project-related scientific literature, data collection, data processing, coding, analysis, and dissemination. Duties may include co-supervising undergraduate and graduate research assistants, project management, data entry, transcription, library, and administrative work as project needs warrant. Periodic domestic travel for data collection or other research activities is also required.
Applications are sought from candidates with doctoral degrees in higher education or one of the social science disciplines (e.g., sociology, psychology, economics). We would also consider applicants with doctoral degrees from a STEM discipline who have expertise in social science research methodology. Proficiency with both qualitative (NVivo, AtlasTI) and quantitative (SAS, STATA) data management software, experience in the analysis of qualitative interviews and focus-groups, and the ability to integrate secondary quantitative data are highly desired. A working knowledge of the literature on science identity, career development, and vocational preferences as well as some experience (e.g., an undergraduate degree) in a STEM discipline are useful backgrounds for this position.
